About Middlesex School

Founded to educate the children of Boston, Middlesex (frequently abbreviated MX) has a long history of educational excellence. It has been completely secular for its entire history, making it historically attractive to religious minorities. It maintains top educational quality today, and is popular with students from around the world.

Required Materials

Online Application Portal: You must complete an inquiry form first; once this is done you will be able to access the online application.

Standardized Tests: These are required. You may submit SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, ACT or SAT scores.

Interview: Interviews are not required, but you are invited to complete one, either on campus as part of a visit, or virtually. We recommend all student complete an interview.

Parent Interview: Not required, though a parent statement is.

Recommendations: Required from your current math and English teachers, and from a principal or counselor. You may optionally include a special interest recommendation.

Transcripts: Required.

Other materials: An arts interest or athletic interest form is recommended if you intend to participate in those activities on campus.

Academic Information

Curriculum Information: A full list of courses available, and descriptions, can be found here.

Graduation Requirements: 

  • 4 years of English.
  • 4 years of math, through precalculus at minimum.
  • 2 years of laboratory science, with 3 recommended
  • A single foreign language through the third level or for all four years.
  • 3 years of history, with US history required in junior year.
  • 4 elements of style courses (1 semester each) in your first two years.

Note that these are the minimum graduation requirements. We recommend, and colleges prefer to see, that students have taken four years in each of the core academic subjects: Math, English, Science, Social Studies, and a foreign language.

  • Advanced science options include human anatomy and physiology, marine biology, forensic science, astronomy, engineering, and robotics.

  • Computer science options include web development, mobile app development, language specific courses, data structures, algorithms, and analytics.

Educational Philosophy: The purpose of the Middlesex academic program is to instill a love of learning and develop the skills that are essential to education in the liberal arts, the fine arts, and the sciences.
