Required Materials

Online Application Portal: The school uses Ravenna to handle its online applications. The main entry points for the school vary by year, but are generally 6, 7, 8, and 9th grade. Entry to other grades is contingent on spaces being available.

Standardized Tests: ISEE scores are required.

Interview: Required. You may sign up for an interview slot after submitting the application.

Parent Interview: At least one parent or guardian must participate in the student interview. An optional parent statement may also be included in the application.

Recommendations: Two teacher recommendations are required.

Transcripts: Required from the prior two years and a progress report from the current year.

Other materials: An essay is required as part of the application.

Academic Information

Curriculum Information: Horace Mann focuses on a liberal arts curriculum, providing students a solid foundation in all core academic areas.

Graduation Requirements: 

  • 4 years of English
  • 3 years of history, including Modern World History and US History
  • 2 years of math (Geometry and Algebra II & Trigonometry)
  • 2 years of science (biology and chemistry or physics)
  • Proficiency through level III in one foreign language
  • 3 semesters of art, with at least one each in performance and appreciation
  • 1 semester computer science
  • 4 years PE, unless replaced by participation in a sport
  • Health 1 & 2, and CPR/AED certification
  • Participation in service-learning days

Note that these are the minimum graduation requirements. We recommend, and colleges prefer to see, that students have taken four years in each of the core academic subjects: Math, English, Science, Social Studies, and a foreign language.

Research Options: Research methods courses are offered as a science elective. This begins by introducing students to the scientific method and research techniques, and continues through partnerships which allow students to explore research over the summer. This is only available through departmental approval.

 

Advanced Study Options: Horace Mann does not offer AP courses, instead offering advanced study options of their own design in several fields.

  • Computer science options include an advanced seminar, ethical hacking, web app development, production engineering workshop, CS theory, and Art of Data
  • Advanced math options include linear algebra and math seminar.
  • Science options include astronomy, genetics, human anatomy, biotechnology, and organic chemistry.

Extracurricular Options

Campus Information: Horace Mann’s main campus is a single building in the Bronx, though students are separated by division within the school. Their Connecticut campus is used for extended field trips and orienteering experiences. 

Arts Programs: Horace Mann’s arts program allows students to explore the arts through both courses and extracurriculars.
