About Carnegie Vanguard High School

Located near downtown Houston, all students at Carnegie Vanguard count as gifted and talented, and all classes are offered at the honors level. All students are required to take at least 10 APs before graduation, and the school is well known for its advanced curriculum. It is consistently ranked as one of the top public high schools in both Texas and the US.

Curriculum Information: A full list of the courses offered can be found here. Note that all academic courses are offered at the Honors or AP level.

 

Graduation Requirements: 

  • 4 years of English
  • 4 years of math
  • 4 years of science
  • 4 years of social studies
  • 2 years of a language other than English
  • 1 year physical education
  • 1 semester of health
  • 1 sequential credit of fine art
  • 5.5 years of electives

Note that these are the minimum graduation requirements. We recommend, and colleges prefer to see, that students have taken four years in each of the core academic subjects: Math, English, Science, Social Studies, and a foreign language.

Advanced Study Options: 

  • Advanced science courses include wildlife conservation, anatomy & physiology, and organic chemistry.
  • There is an advanced math topics course which covers the math used in upper level engineering.
